In our department, we view teaching and learning as reciprocal, collaborative processes in which educators and students shape one another through shared inquiry and critical reflection. In line with the institution’s Humanising Pedagogy Framework, our pedagogy is grounded in interdependence, social justice, and a commitment to human dignity.

We foster a learning environment that is relational, student-centered and contextually responsive. This involves creating inclusive spaces that draw on students’ lived experiences and diverse knowledges, supporting the development of critical self-awareness, social consciousness and ethical practice. Teaching is responsive to students’ stages of readiness and attuned to their development as whole human beings.

Our approach is grounded in critical pedagogy that challenges dominant paradigms, fosters reflexivity, and prepares students for the complexities of social work. We recognize that meaningful learning is shaped by relationships and co-created in dialogue.

We use technology purposefully, only where it enhances human connection, supports collaboration, and aligns with our ethical commitment to the collective good. Above all, we are committed to teaching students who will engage the world with courage, empathy, and a deep sense of social responsibility.

Universal Accessibility and Disability Services

At Nelson Mandela University, we are committed to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all our students. Through the Universal Accessibility and Disability Services (UADS), we ensure that students with disabilities or specific learning needs are fully supported throughout their academic journey. UADS works closely with faculties to provide reasonable accommodations, access to assistive technologies, and tailored support services that promote equal participation. Our goal is to ensure that every student, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to thrive and succeed in their studies. For more information, please visit the UADS webpage.

All second-year students must register with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) before commencing with their practical placements.
