MASTER OF SOCIAL WORK IN RESEARCH (65350)
THE PURPOSE OF THE LEARNING PROGRAMME
This programme has been approved in terms of the new Higher Education Qualification
Sub-Framework (HEQSF).
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Unless Senate decides otherwise, candidates shall be admitted to the studies for the degree of Master of Social Work only if they have obtained the four-year Bachelor of Social Work or the Bachelor of Arts Honours in Social Work. Prospective candidates shall be selected and must present themselves for a personal interview.
STATUTORY AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Students may only register as full-time candidates if they are available on a day-today basis to attend and participate in the postgraduate programme. A student who is unable to attend as stated will be automatically be defined as a part-time student for the purpose of postgraduate studies. Changes to the status of a candidate from parttime to full-time or vice versa need to be approved by the Chairperson of the Faculty of Postgraduate Studies Committee.
N.B: The Master of Social Work (Clinical) (Coursework and Research) (QC 60355) has been deactivated for three years as from 2024 to 2026.
MASTER OF SOCIAL WORK IN CLINICAL SOCIAL WORK (60355)
Rationale of the qualification
The generic qualification in Social Work enable social work practitioners to promote social change, problem solving in human relationships and the empowerment and liberation of people to enhance well-being, as articulated in the International Definition of Social Work. In order to address the rapidly evolving changes at socio-political, technological and economic level in South African society and the world at large, it is important to equip Social Workers with specialist knowledge and skills to both prevent and treat the impact such changes have on individual, couple and family functioning.
Purpose of the qualification
The Master of Social Work in Clinical Social Work degree programme aims to equip qualified social workers with advanced in-depth knowledge and skills to promote the optimal mental health and psycho-social, emotional and economic functioning of individuals, couple, family and community systems. The programme has a transformative agenda, and aspire to co-construct contextually and culturally relevant prevention and treatment approaches with the Clinical social work postgraduate students. This purpose resonates with the University’s mission and goals, as well as the vision of the Health Sciences Faculty to provide a transformative and fit-for purpose education that aim to equip students to address the structural, economic and social inequalities that prevail in post-Apartheid South Africa.
Admission requirements
Unless Senate decides otherwise, candidates shall be admitted to the studies for the degree only if they have obtained the four-year Bachelor of Social Work or the Bachelor of Arts Honours in Social Work with a 60% average and two years social work practice experience. Prospective candidates shall be selected and must present themselves for a personal interview.
